This course is designed foremost for trainees and early career pathologists. It consists of two parts: Part I, Neoplastic & Molecular pathology, and Part II, Interstitial lung diseases.
Each part will include lectures and workshops with selected cases directed by the instructors. The participants will work with a digital microscope throughout the course and have full command of the slides.
The course lectures and workshops will take place in person at the Unit of Pathology, Jan Waldenströms gata 77, 4th floor, 21428 Malmö - Sweden.
English will be the official language of the course.

Course directors

Prof. Anja C. Roden, M.D.
Dr. Anja C. Roden is Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology and is a board certified Anatomic and Clinical Pathologist with special interest in thoracic pathology.
Dr. Roden received her medical training at the Humboldt University in Berlin and Technical University in Dresden, Germany. After training in general surgery and working in basic immunology science she completed her anatomic and clinical pathology residency, surgical pathology fellowship, and pulmonary Mayo Clinic scholarship at Mayo Clinic Rochester, US. Subsequently, she joined the staff of the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Mayo Clinic Rochester, MN, USA. Dr. Roden also serves as the Medical Director of the Immunostains Laboratory, the Pulmonary Pathology Fellowship Director, and the head of the thoracic transplant section.
Dr. Roden focuses her research on mediastinal neoplasms, mesothelioma, biomarkers, and pulmonary transplant pathology. She published her work in over 190 peer-reviewed manuscripts, wrote more than 40 book chapters and co-edited 2 textbooks on mediastinal, pulmonary, and mesothelial neoplasms and non-neoplastic lung disease. Following her interests, she chairs the thymic carcinoma and mediastinal working groups of the International Thymic Malignancy Interest Group, is a member of the steering committee of the thymic domain of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer for the 10th TNM staging and is a member of an International Mesothelioma Panel and an International Virtual Thymoma Panel. She is the immediate Past-President of the International Thymic Malignancy Interest Group, chair of the thymic subcommittee of the rare tumor committee of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, co-chair of the mediastinal working group of the European Society of Pathology, and the immediate past chair of the pathology community network of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation.

Cristian Ortiz-Villalón, M.D. PhD PhD MBA
Dr. Ortiz-Villalón is a distinguished expert in pulmonary pathology with an extensive background in both clinical practice and research. Currently, Dr. Ortiz-Villalón serves as the Head Unit of Clinical Genetics, Pathology, and Molecular Diagnostics at Malmö University Hospital in Sweden. He holds a PhD from Kyoto University, Japan, and a PhD from the University of Valencia, Spain. His notable positions include Head of the Department of Pathology at Karolinska University Hospital-Danderyd, Sweden, and Senior Director of Global Medical Affairs Diagnostics at AstraZeneca. Dr. Ortiz-Villalón has also served as President of the Swedish Society of Pathology and is an Affiliated researcher at Karolinska Institute and guest professor at Nagasaki University. Dr. Ortiz-Villalón is widely regarded for his accomplishments in pathology, notably founding Pathology Science OÜ, implementing Digital Pathology and Computational Pathology (DP/CP) at Karolinska University Hospital, and authoring national and international guidelines on lung cancer, mesothelioma, and interstitial lung diseases (ILD). His work has led to significant achievements, including lab accreditations from Swedac, Equalis, ISO15189, and ISO9001, underscoring his commitment to high-quality standards in pathology and diagnostics.
Through his distinguished career and leadership in medical research, Dr. Ortiz-Villalón continues to make groundbreaking contributions to the fields of pathology, molecular diagnostics, and clinical genetics.

Prof. César A. Moran, M.D.
Dr. Moran is currently professor of pathology in the department of pathology at the M D Anderson Cancer Center in Houston Texas, USA. Over his career, Dr. Moran has written over 380 manuscripts, 47, book chapters, and 12 books. Dr. Moran has been an invited lecturer in many countries around the world – Europe, Asia, Middle East, North, Central and South America, and Australia. In addition, Dr. Moran is the co-editor-in-chief of Annals of Diagnostic Pathology and the Editor of the Journal of Respiration.

Prof. Leticia Bornstein MD PhD
Dr. Bornstein currently serves as the General Director of the InmunoQ Laboratory in Mexico City and is a board-certified pathologist with a particular interest in biomarkers and companion diagnostics in oncology, with a focus on lung and breast cancer. She obtained her medical degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in Mexico City. She subsequently completed a Master's in Medical Sciences and a Fellowship in Hematopathology and Oncologic Pathology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Bornstein is currently a full professor for the Fellowship in Immunohistochemistry and Molecular Pathology at La Salle University. She has an extensive academic record, including numerous publications, book chapters, and editorial contributions to scientific literature.

Paul Waring MD PhD
Prof. Paul Waring is a distinguished pathologist with an extensive and varied career in both academic and industry settings. He earned his MBBS from the University of Western Australia in 1982, followed by a Fellowship in Anatomical Pathology from the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 1989. He completed his PhD in 1993 at the prestigious Walter and Eliza Hall Institute in collaboration with the University of Melbourne and held a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University in 1995.
In 2001, he became a Fellow of the Human Genetics Society (Molecular Genetics), and in 2008, he achieved Fellowship with the Royal College of Pathologists by Research. He was named a Founding Fellow of the Faculty of Science, Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 2010.
Prof. Waring has served as Executive Director of Translational Pathology at AstraZeneca in Cambridge, UK, and Vice President of Medical Innovation at Ventana Medical Systems (Roche Dx) in Tucson, USA. Professor Waring has also held key roles at leading institutions, including Chair of Pathology at the University of Melbourne, Sr. Director of Pathology and Diagnostics at Genentech in San Francisco, and Director of Pathology at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, Australia. He played a central role in early-stage biomarker collaborations between AstraZeneca and Roche.
Professor Waring holds honorary appointments at the University of Cambridge and the University of Melbourne.
